PAHK Then and Now It all began in 1961, when some of the first Filipino residents in Hong Kong, then numbering less than 200, gathered for socials and on special occasions in the then British Crown Colony. Throughout the years, the gatherings among Filipinos and their friends in Hong Kong gained such momentum that the Philippine Association of Hong Kong (PAHK) was eventually formed on 28th May 1981 under the Societies Ordinance (Cap. 151). On 13th September 1994, the PAHK became an incorporated body when it registered as a non-stock and non-profit company limited by guarantee under the Companies Ordinance (Cap. 32). From its inception, the PAHK has evolved into an organization which, among others, promotes friendship, fellowship and understanding, and provides forum for the exchange of information among members who do not only include Philippine nationals, but also friends from other countries who embrace the objects and purposes of the Association. The PAHK also supports charitable causes and in recent years, has spearheaded projects that aim to benefit a wider sector of the Filipino community in Hong Kong. Today, there are around 200,000 Filipinos residing in Hong Kong for employment or otherwise. The PAHK’s membership boasts of a number of Filipinos who have excelled in their respective fields of expertise. Members and friends of the PAHK may participate in yearly events, functions and affairs which include the following: The Philippine Independence Ball, usually celebrated on the Saturday closest to the 12th of June every year, and the community-wide celebration at Chater Garden, Central, the day after. Other PAHK activities include: Monthly cocktails ordinarily held on the last Thursday of every month; Business seminars and conferences featuring officials and other distinguished personalities from the Philippines, Hong Kong and other countries, in association with other groups; Family Sports Day, usually held in October each year; Art exhibits and cultural events, staged at least once during the year; Children’s Christmas Party, usually held on the first Sunday of December; Golf and other sports tournaments; Community projects, such as the “Clean Central Campaign” and other activities involving Filipino domestic helpers in Hong Kong. |
