20 years of service to the community
|
Time flies.
Exactly 20 years ago this month, The SUN shone for the Filipinos in Hong Kong. It was
the fulfillment of a dream that took shape years earlier, or shortly after I arrived here in 1987 and
realized there was no reliable information channel serving the community.
But turning that dream into reality proved to be difficult. Several people offered to fund
the publication of a news-paper, but everyone wanted a business model different from what we had
in mind.

Nanay Gloria's journey to HK

President Benigno Simeon Aquino III recently told the media that cases of tanim-bala
were sensationalized, citing figures to prove his point. As an OFW advocate, I respectfully
disagree. Looking at this from a purely numbers perspective could lead one to overlook the deep trauma
that such incidents have caused its innocent victims.
Had he met and spoken to 56-year old OFW Gloria Ortinez, our President would have
learned the following:

Staff and volunteers at the Mission for Migrant Workers had reason to celebrate when
they launched the non-government organization's 10-year Impact Evaluation Report at Li Hall of St
John's Cathedral on Dec. 4. Nearly all, or 97% of migrants who sought assistance said that they were
helped by the Mission, and more than half of them (57%) said they would recommend the NGO to others.

The tough guy from Davao City, Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, has reiterated his vow to rid
the Philippines of criminals and drug suppliers "to make it a safer place for your (OFW) children".
He also will improve the economy if wins the presidency, so Filipinos working abroad will
find jobs in their own country.
On the "tanim-bala" scam at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, he believes there are a
few crooked airport authorities victimizing passengers, but it's not a big organized syndicate. And
Criminality and drugs at the top of Duterte's five-point platform as he finally runs for
the presidency. He also targets graft and corruption, peace and order and government reforms.
Duterte revealed his plans in am exclusive interview with The SUN on Nov 24, saying he
was doing it in defense of the Constitution.
He said the Senate Electoral Tribunal that ruled in favor of leading presidential candidate
Grace Poe in a disqualification case against her had violated the law of the land, thus prompting him to run.
Wala talaga kasi akong kaambi-ambisyon
maging Presidente. Prinsipyo lang talaga ang nagtutulak sa akin," he said.
He said the prospect of winning is not a factor in his last-minute decision to run. The
results won't be important for him, let alone the notion that the Commission on Election could even
reject his certificate of candidacy because of legal complications.
"Matter of principle talaga ako, I need only one day to face the Filipino people and to say
my truth. I cannot promise you heaven but I will make the Philippines a comfortable place to live in,"
he concluded.
He said he is going to file his certificate of candidacy on Dec 10.
He was in Hong Kong for the birthday celebration of a Chinese friend, which he attended
with his running mate, Senator Alan Peter Cayetano.
Duterte also took the chance to meet with some of his supporters who have never wavered
in their support for him, even when he kept on saying that he did not have an intention to seek
the presidency.
Duterte's no-nonsense five-point platform and his short explanation for each:
yung transportasyon."
(The SUN will publish the full interview with Duterte next issue)
