20 years of service to the community
|
Time flies.
Exactly 20 years ago this month, The SUN shone for the Filipinos in Hong Kong. It was
the fulfillment of a dream that took shape years earlier, or shortly after I arrived here in 1987 and
realized there was no reliable information channel serving the community.
But turning that dream into reality proved to be difficult. Several people offered to fund
the publication of a news-paper, but everyone wanted a business model different from what we had
in mind.

Nanay Gloria's journey to HK

President Benigno Simeon Aquino III recently told the media that cases of tanim-bala
were sensationalized, citing figures to prove his point. As an OFW advocate, I respectfully
disagree. Looking at this from a purely numbers perspective could lead one to overlook the deep trauma
that such incidents have caused its innocent victims.
Had he met and spoken to 56-year old OFW Gloria Ortinez, our President would have
learned the following:

Staff and volunteers at the Mission for Migrant Workers had reason to celebrate when
they launched the non-government organization's 10-year Impact Evaluation Report at Li Hall of St
John's Cathedral on Dec. 4. Nearly all, or 97% of migrants who sought assistance said that they were
helped by the Mission, and more than half of them (57%) said they would recommend the NGO to others.

Officers from the Philippine Consulate General and the Hong Kong Labour Department
will link hands to provide free consultation services to Filipino migrant workers during The SUN's
20th anniversary celebration on Dec. 20 in Chater Garden, Central.
The unprecedented cooperation was secured at the behest of Consul General Bernardita
Catalla, who has lauded The SUN's aim of providing pre-holiday treat to Filipino workers.
The two agencies are just among several groups that have agreed to join The SUN's plan
of providing for the special needs of the hundreds of migrants expected to converge during the day.
They include Pintura Circle, which will provide three sessions of free hour-long art lessons
; Balikatan sa Kaularan HK which will conduct on-the-spot livelihood training, and various
groups under the Mission for Migrant Workers' Care to Caregivers project where free health and
wellness services can be availed of.
The participating organizations include Mindanao Federation, Isabela Federation,
Unifil-Migrante HK, National Organization of Professional Teachers HK, Integrated Midwives
Association of the Philippines HK, Radiant Organization of Amiable Drivers HK, Taekwondo Association,
Likha Cultural Group, Samahang Tarlaqueno, Musang, Section Juan and the Philippine Association
of Hong Kong.
The celebration will be kicked off with a Catholic mass from 10-11am, followed by a parade
of participating organizations.
Early performers will be Filcom organizers which will each make a unique presentation
ranging from cultural dance, play, balagtasan, pantomime, and others.
The event will be capped with a concert by artists belonging to the Hong Kong
Musicians Union to be led by jazz diva Jennifer Palor, drummer Satur Tiamzon and singer-musician
