20 years of service to the community
|
Time flies.
Exactly 20 years ago this month, The SUN shone for the Filipinos in Hong Kong. It was
the fulfillment of a dream that took shape years earlier, or shortly after I arrived here in 1987 and
realized there was no reliable information channel serving the community.
But turning that dream into reality proved to be difficult. Several people offered to fund
the publication of a news-paper, but everyone wanted a business model different from what we had
in mind.

Pagpapabaya

Nanay Gloria's journey to HK

President Benigno Simeon Aquino III recently told the media that cases of tanim-bala
were sensationalized, citing figures to prove his point. As an OFW advocate, I respectfully
disagree. Looking at this from a purely numbers perspective could lead one to overlook the deep trauma
that such incidents have caused its innocent victims.
Had he met and spoken to 56-year old OFW Gloria Ortinez, our President would have
learned the following:

Staff and volunteers at the Mission for Migrant Workers had reason to celebrate when
they launched the non-government organization's 10-year Impact Evaluation Report at Li Hall of St
John's Cathedral on Dec. 4. Nearly all, or 97% of migrants who sought assistance said that they were
helped by the Mission, and more than half of them (57%) said they would recommend the NGO to others.

Tenpin bowling's living legend Rafael "Paeng" Nepomuceno has ruled out retiring from
the sport in the near future.
"I'll continue playing as long as I can still roll the ball," the six-time World Cup
of
Bowling champion told The SUN at the sidelines of the Square and Compass Hong Kong
3rd Charity Tournament on Jul 11.
He was the guest of honor and player in the exhibition match, along with East Asian
champion Wu Siu-hong, at the annual event staged at Dragon Lanes in Oi Man Centre in Homantin
by
the Filipino Free Masonry group in Hong Kong.
Nepomuceno, who started bowling at 13 and has since won several titles at home, in
Asia
and around the world, says he is still strong enough to play. True enough, he effortlessly
rolled his
first ball to a strike during practice to the delight of the other players and the audience.
The 58-year-old kegler is determined to represent the Philippines in the World Cup in
Las
Vegas on Nov. 13-20, but says he needs to win one major tournament at the end of July from
which the
top players from 110 countries will qualify.
He says bowling continues to be neglected by the government, with no financial support
for players, much less attention for the sport that has hauled in scores of gold trophies for
the
country over the past decades.
"Wala, hanggang ngayon, talagang walang suporta," the champion, who has practically
devoted his life to bowling, says ruefully.
But despite the apathy, Nepomuceno sees hope in the current crop of young Filipino
keglers. "Maraming magagaling," he says, adding that there are many of these young talents
around
the world.
On the Dragon Lanes, Nepomuceno calmly witnessed the difference between age and
youth when in the first game of the exhibition match, Hong Kong star bowler Wu racked up
strike
after strike and missed just a few frames to score 265 pinfalls.
For his part, the Filipino legend finished with a 258, but then caught up with the 30
-year-old
Wu in the next game, matching up with the local hero strike after strike.
