20 years of service to the community
|
Time flies.
Exactly 20 years ago this month, The SUN shone for the Filipinos in Hong Kong. It was
the fulfillment of a dream that took shape years earlier, or shortly after I arrived here in 1987 and
realized there was no reliable information channel serving the community.
But turning that dream into reality proved to be difficult. Several people offered to fund
the publication of a news-paper, but everyone wanted a business model different from what we had
in mind.

Nanay Gloria's journey to HK

President Benigno Simeon Aquino III recently told the media that cases of tanim-bala
were sensationalized, citing figures to prove his point. As an OFW advocate, I respectfully
disagree. Looking at this from a purely numbers perspective could lead one to overlook the deep trauma
that such incidents have caused its innocent victims.
Had he met and spoken to 56-year old OFW Gloria Ortinez, our President would have
learned the following:

Staff and volunteers at the Mission for Migrant Workers had reason to celebrate when
they launched the non-government organization's 10-year Impact Evaluation Report at Li Hall of St
John's Cathedral on Dec. 4. Nearly all, or 97% of migrants who sought assistance said that they were
helped by the Mission, and more than half of them (57%) said they would recommend the NGO to others.

About a dozen secondary-school Filipino youth learned the basic points of drawing in a
two-hour art workshop conducted by visiting Manila-based artists at the Consulate on May 14.
Working with pencil and pastel oil, the participants were taught the principle of light
and shadow and how it creates volume and depth in painting and drawing.
The session began with Francis Nacion, Gerrico Blanco and Ram Mallari, who
represented three genres, letting the budding artists draw a bottle of wine at eye level to see their
individual skills.
"What we're going to teach you this evening will remain with you for the rest of your
lives, wherever you go," said Nacion a surrealist known in the art world for his one-eyed portraits.
Then the masters showed the participants how to create dimension by making them redraw
the bottle from a gradient angle.
Next was applying the light and shadow principle to pencil and pastel strokes, before the
final challenge of making still-life drawings of an apple, an orange, or a pear using specific colors
of pastel oil assigned to each of the participants.
"We organized this workshop to develop the creativity of the Filipino youth here in Hong
Kong and I'm quite impressed by the artistic talent of the participants," Vice Consul Fatima Quintin of
the consulate's cultural section told The SUN.
"We hope to invite more of our artists in Manila to conduct similar workshops as they
exhibit their works in Hong Kong," Quintin said.
Nacion, realist painter Blanco and scrap sculptor Mallari held the workshop at the end of
their three-day "Trichotomy" exhibit at the Consulate reception hall from May 12 to 14.
The trio was brought to Hong Kong by Pintura Circle, a group of six female and one
male Filipino artists based mostly in the territory.
