20 years of service to the community
|
Time flies.
Exactly 20 years ago this month, The SUN shone for the Filipinos in Hong Kong. It was
the fulfillment of a dream that took shape years earlier, or shortly after I arrived here in 1987 and
realized there was no reliable information channel serving the community.
But turning that dream into reality proved to be difficult. Several people offered to fund
the publication of a news-paper, but everyone wanted a business model different from what we had
in mind.

Pagpapabaya

Nanay Gloria's journey to HK

President Benigno Simeon Aquino III recently told the media that cases of tanim-bala
were sensationalized, citing figures to prove his point. As an OFW advocate, I respectfully
disagree. Looking at this from a purely numbers perspective could lead one to overlook the deep trauma
that such incidents have caused its innocent victims.
Had he met and spoken to 56-year old OFW Gloria Ortinez, our President would have
learned the following:

Staff and volunteers at the Mission for Migrant Workers had reason to celebrate when
they launched the non-government organization's 10-year Impact Evaluation Report at Li Hall of St
John's Cathedral on Dec. 4. Nearly all, or 97% of migrants who sought assistance said that they were
helped by the Mission, and more than half of them (57%) said they would recommend the NGO to others.

Three Filipinos including an overstaying former domestic worker, appeared in Eastern Court
on May 22 to face drug trafficking charges.
Cresencio D. Patungan, Leah D.L. San Esteban and Veronica M. Baylon were taken into
custody after a police raid on a room in Asia Hotel guesthouse on King's Road, North Point on May
20 yielded 32.9 grams of suspected methamphetamine.
An additional charge of breach of condition of stay was laid against Baylon, a
44-year-old former maid, for staying on in Hong Kong after her visa lapsed on May 17, 2010.
A prosecution report said Patungan, 45, was found in possession of 5.62 grams of
methamphetamine of "shabu" packed in four resealable transparent plastic bags.
San Esteban, 35, was caught with three resealable transparent plastic bags with 1.08 grams
of the banned substance, while Baylon was found in possession of nine such bags containing a total
of 25.2 grams of the drug.
The visa status of Patungan and San Esteban were not disclosed.
The charge sheet said Baylon had overstayed her visa contrary to Section 41 of the
Immigration Ordinance for continuing to stay in Hong Kong despite her helper's visa expiring five years ago.
Principal Magistrate Bina Chainrai granted Patungan a cash bail of $1,400 but rejected the
bail application of San Esteban because of her lack of local ties, meaning she has no family here.
Chainrai refused to grant bail to Baylon and told her to go to the Court of First Instance to
make her application.
The magistrate set the next hearing of the case for July 17.
