20 years of service to the community
|
Time flies.
Exactly 20 years ago this month, The SUN shone for the Filipinos in Hong Kong. It was
the fulfillment of a dream that took shape years earlier, or shortly after I arrived here in 1987 and
realized there was no reliable information channel serving the community.
But turning that dream into reality proved to be difficult. Several people offered to fund
the publication of a news-paper, but everyone wanted a business model different from what we had
in mind.

Nanay Gloria's journey to HK

President Benigno Simeon Aquino III recently told the media that cases of tanim-bala
were sensationalized, citing figures to prove his point. As an OFW advocate, I respectfully
disagree. Looking at this from a purely numbers perspective could lead one to overlook the deep trauma
that such incidents have caused its innocent victims.
Had he met and spoken to 56-year old OFW Gloria Ortinez, our President would have
learned the following:

Staff and volunteers at the Mission for Migrant Workers had reason to celebrate when
they launched the non-government organization's 10-year Impact Evaluation Report at Li Hall of St
John's Cathedral on Dec. 4. Nearly all, or 97% of migrants who sought assistance said that they were
helped by the Mission, and more than half of them (57%) said they would recommend the NGO to others.

If you're asked by your employers to make bookings for them at a government facility,
don't because it is illegal.
For an extra $500 a month, Filipina domestic worker Violeta V. Morales used to wake
up around 4am to wait at the booking window of a sport center in Sai Ying Pun and make an early court reservation for her employer, a tennis coach.
But things turned bad on Sept. 17 last year while she was doing the errand at the Sun Yat
Sen Memorial Park and Sport Centre. She was stopped by police at around 6am for an ID check,
and asked what she was doing there.
She was arrested after she said she had been instructed by her boss, Ng Man-kit, to book him
a court at the sports center.
A police check of the reservation log at the centre confirmed that Morales had already booked
a court for Ng for two sessions on Sept. 26, 2014, using her own Hong Kong ID card.
On further questioning, she told the officers she was being paid an extra $500 a month
since July last year to run the special errand.
The $500 extra income, however, was considered a violation by Morales of immigration
rules as stated in her employment contract, and she was arrested and charged with breach of condition
of stay.
There was no indication, however, of whether her employer was also charged for abetting
the offence.
On Apr 10, at the start of her scheduled trial hearing in Shatin court, Morales pleaded guilty
to the charge and admitted the prosecution report.
In mitigation, Morales' duty lawyer said the defendant was aware she was in breach of
her condition of stay and that she was remorseful. She also had a clear record, the lawyer said.
Magistrate Ho Chun-yiu.gave Morales a sentence of eight weeks in jail discounted by half
and suspended for three years.
"If you commit no other crime in the next three years then you don't need to serve that
sentence in jail," he said.
Morales broke into tears and embraced her friends who accompanied her to the court.
Records show that Morales was employed by Ng as helper since 1998.
