20 years of service to the community
|
Time flies.
Exactly 20 years ago this month, The SUN shone for the Filipinos in Hong Kong. It was
the fulfillment of a dream that took shape years earlier, or shortly after I arrived here in 1987 and
realized there was no reliable information channel serving the community.
But turning that dream into reality proved to be difficult. Several people offered to fund
the publication of a news-paper, but everyone wanted a business model different from what we had
in mind.

Nanay Gloria's journey to HK

President Benigno Simeon Aquino III recently told the media that cases of tanim-bala
were sensationalized, citing figures to prove his point. As an OFW advocate, I respectfully
disagree. Looking at this from a purely numbers perspective could lead one to overlook the deep trauma
that such incidents have caused its innocent victims.
Had he met and spoken to 56-year old OFW Gloria Ortinez, our President would have
learned the following:

Staff and volunteers at the Mission for Migrant Workers had reason to celebrate when
they launched the non-government organization's 10-year Impact Evaluation Report at Li Hall of St
John's Cathedral on Dec. 4. Nearly all, or 97% of migrants who sought assistance said that they were
helped by the Mission, and more than half of them (57%) said they would recommend the NGO to others.

January this year was a record month for overseas
voter registration in Hong Kong, with a
total of 1,549 voters listing up for the 2016 presidential
election, according to the Consulate.
OVR team head Vice Consul Fatima Guzman-
Quintin told
The SUN in an interview that the January figure would
take the Consulate closer to its target of 20,000 registrants by
the time
the listing closes on Oct. 31 this year.
The January number was 130.7 percent more than
the 671 registrants in December, the
lowest for a single month since listing began last May.
Quintin attributed the upsurge in the registration
figures to the intensified campaign of
the Consulate to convince members of the Filipino community
in Hong Kong to register.
"Now we have weekly mobile OVRs. Last time, we
had one at St. Joseph Church, and
another at World-Wide House," she said. Quintin heads the
resident election registration board of the
Consulate, which oversees the OVR in Hong Kong.
Registration applications are sent to the Commission
on Elections central office in Manila
every month after being evaluated by the RERB members.
However, issuance of Comelec ID cards to
the newly listed voters may take some time.
"We are planning another one at World Wide next
Sunday (Feb. 22). We are also looking
to hold it in Tin Shui Wai and at St. Mary's Church in
Kowloon," she said.
The Consulate considers the World Wide House in
Central as the ideal site for OVR because
it is a favorite haunt of Filipino workers.
Starting in February, an OVR registration desk was
set up in the public area of the
Consulate next to the passport window.
A week later, the desk was moved to the lift lobby
on the
14th floor of United Centre, a move that
excited OVR staff as they said since the daily registration
numbers had doubled since they
were posted there.
The OVR unit of the Consulate was just a few steps
away from the lifts but had attracted
fewer registrants before the new desk was positioned at the lift
lobby. -
