20 years of service to the community
|
Time flies.
Exactly 20 years ago this month, The SUN shone for the Filipinos in Hong Kong. It was
the fulfillment of a dream that took shape years earlier, or shortly after I arrived here in 1987 and
realized there was no reliable information channel serving the community.
But turning that dream into reality proved to be difficult. Several people offered to fund
the publication of a news-paper, but everyone wanted a business model different from what we had
in mind.

Nanay Gloria's journey to HK

President Benigno Simeon Aquino III recently told the media that cases of tanim-bala
were sensationalized, citing figures to prove his point. As an OFW advocate, I respectfully
disagree. Looking at this from a purely numbers perspective could lead one to overlook the deep trauma
that such incidents have caused its innocent victims.
Had he met and spoken to 56-year old OFW Gloria Ortinez, our President would have
learned the following:

Staff and volunteers at the Mission for Migrant Workers had reason to celebrate when
they launched the non-government organization's 10-year Impact Evaluation Report at Li Hall of St
John's Cathedral on Dec. 4. Nearly all, or 97% of migrants who sought assistance said that they were
helped by the Mission, and more than half of them (57%) said they would recommend the NGO to others.

Mid-November 2014

Around 3,000 Filipinos in Hong Kong have registered so far for the
Philippine
presidential election in 2016.
This number may rise by up to 500 more after an election registration
board hearing on Nov. 17.
Vice Consul Fatima Guzman who chairs the post's resident election
registration board, told
The SUN said that a decision on whether to approve the applications received
until end-October will
be made at the meeting.
During previous registrations, the task was said to have been carried
out by the Commission
on Elections.
"Bale yung previous registrations for 2009-2010, all the
applications were sent to Comelec to
be reviewed by the election registration board of Comelec," Guzman said.
"(This) time, it will be reviewed by the resident election registration
board (that is) present
in all embassies and consulates so, each embassy, each consulate,
meron po silang RERB," she said.
Guzman said that the Consulate is stepping up the OVR campaign,
but ruled out a
second mobile listing in Yuen Long this year, as requested by the Filipino
community in the district,
because of lack of manpower.
"Maybe next year," she said when asked when a second OVR there
could be held.
The OVR started on May 7 this year and ends on Oct. 31 next year.
On Nov. 9, the registration was conducted at LBC North Point,
following a previous list-up
on Lamma island on Oct. 26, and in Yuen Long on October 19.
"Inaayos na ho naming for
November para makarami tayo. And then Consul
General (Bernardita) Catalla wants to include other services
para pagpunta doon sa mobile
registration," Guzman said.
She said an OVR window had been opened next to the passport
window so registrants need
not cross over to the other side of the Consulate to register to vote.
