20 years of service to the community
|
Time flies.
Exactly 20 years ago this month, The SUN shone for the Filipinos in Hong Kong. It was
the fulfillment of a dream that took shape years earlier, or shortly after I arrived here in 1987 and
realized there was no reliable information channel serving the community.
But turning that dream into reality proved to be difficult. Several people offered to fund
the publication of a news-paper, but everyone wanted a business model different from what we had
in mind.

Nanay Gloria's journey to HK

President Benigno Simeon Aquino III recently told the media that cases of tanim-bala
were sensationalized, citing figures to prove his point. As an OFW advocate, I respectfully
disagree. Looking at this from a purely numbers perspective could lead one to overlook the deep trauma
that such incidents have caused its innocent victims.
Had he met and spoken to 56-year old OFW Gloria Ortinez, our President would have
learned the following:

Staff and volunteers at the Mission for Migrant Workers had reason to celebrate when
they launched the non-government organization's 10-year Impact Evaluation Report at Li Hall of St
John's Cathedral on Dec. 4. Nearly all, or 97% of migrants who sought assistance said that they were
helped by the Mission, and more than half of them (57%) said they would recommend the NGO to others.

Shirley Dalisay, the Filipina domestic worker whose job contract was terminated by her
employer less than a month after she suffered serious burns from a toppled pot of newly boiled soup,
has received partial help from the Hong Kong Hospital Authority.
The 33-year-old burn victim was to be given a free follow-up examination on her next visit to
the Tuen Mun Hospital on Aug. 12, according to Edwina Antonio, executive director of Bethune House.
" Tuen Mun Hospital has approved a waiver of her (Dalisay's) medical fee on 12 Aug. 2014 . I
just received this good news today (Aug. 7). We hope they will continue to do so until Shirley is
fully healed," Antonio told The SUN in reply to emailed queries.
The Mission for Migrant Workers, which runs Bethune House, had earlier written a letter to
the Hospital Authority requesting for a waiver of all medical expenses of Dalisay as the domestic
worker is now unemployed, Antonio said.
She did not say if there had been an improvement in the condition of Dalisay, whose burn exposed
a layer of her back muscles, but added "she needs to undergo physiotherapy as some muscles
have been affected by the burn."
At the time The SUN visited Bethune House in July, Dalisay said her burn injury, a triangular
patch running from her shoulder down to her mid-torso, was still fresh even though more than a month
had passed, so she was required to use a special non-stick membrane instead of gauze.
The former elementary school teacher from Quezon, Isabela complained that the injury had
affected her movement and slightly contorted her face, which she said might prevent her from working again.
Antonio said Dalisay has a Legal Aid application for employees' compensation and other
monetary claims against her employer.
