Nearly all OFWs charged excessive fees, NGOs say
Nearly all, or between 90 to 94 percent, of migrant workers who approach two migrant support organizations for help are found to have been charged excessive placement fees by their recruitment agents.

Prosecute rogue agencies, say OFWs
If the illegal collection of placement fees from Filipino domestic workers has to be stopped, the errant agencies must be prosecuted and not merely called to a "conciliation" at the Consulate.

Filipina claiming to be trafficked jailed
Lawyers for a Filipina who claims to have been trafficked into Hong Kong say they will appeal a magistrate's decision on Jan. 31 finding her guilty of violating immigration laws.

The decision came after Shatin Court Deputy Magistrate Lawrence Hui ordered defendant J.S.D. jailed for four and a half months after finding her guilty of working illegally in Hong Kong and overstaying her tourist visa. Details...

Conviction elicits `shock'
A prominent human rights' lawyer has expressed "shock" over how the Justice Department has handled the case of J.S.D., who was sentenced to four months and five days in jail for immigration offences despite claims that she had been trafficked into Hong Kong.

"It's a shocking case, I must say. Both myself and counsel had been truly shocked by the way this was handled," said solicitor Michael Vidler, whose firm, Vidler and Company, handled J.S.D.'s defense. Details...
